Tasmania

I recently visited Tasmania well Hobart really. My sister-in-law, knowing my interest in Quilting had gathered a list of likely places I might want to visit. Well it was more like  - "You will visit" I had heard Ann talk of a recent visit to Hat Creek so was keen to include that to my list. We set off via Richmond, through to the next small town, then on to a dirt road. Finally in the middle of nowhere a sign written on a post "Hat Creek" Along side of the gate was a very large padlock with "NO ENTRY"  We gave up and went home. I later discovered that the owners were in Melbourne at the Quilt Show!!!

Next on to the other places -we went to New Norfolk. It was very small and no one was bothered that I was there.

Hugs and Kisses next stop. Good reviews on the internet. I was excited. Sign on the door. Closed until next week attending the Quilt show in Melbourne.

The Needlewoman was  good but catered for all areas of the crafts spectrum.

Finally I found two but both had representatives at the Quilt Show so couldn't get what I wanted.
-The Patch Works with a great range of fabric and Frangipani Fabrics. They have both promised someone will get back to me. I wonder.

It did mean I didn't exceed my weight limitation on the cheap flight!!

Janice's Quilt

As promised I have posted some photos showing the detail from Janice's beautiful needle turn applique quilt. Can't wait to see it finished. The pattern,  Morning Glory, is made with Willam Morris fabrics designed by Michelle Hill.

Hanging Sleeve Instructions

As part of our preparation for the quilt show we need to make sure we have added a hanging sleeve to each of our quilts.  The following instructions might be useful.  Reference: http://www.mnquilt.org/documents/HangingSleeve.pdf

Hanging Sleeve Instructions
  1. Cut (and piece, if necessary) a strip of fabric 9" wide and the width of the finished quilt.
  2. Hem both short ends by turning 1/4" over twice and stitch close to the folded edge.
  3. Fold the strip in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together and press well.
  4. Open strip and refold, bringing long unfinished edges just to center of the strip to meet at
the pressed fold line. Do not overlap. Press the two long folded edges.
  5. Bring the long unfinished edges together with the wrong sides to the inside, and sew
using a 1/4" seam. Do not turn the resulting tube.
  6. Pin one long pressed edge just under finished upper binding edge on back of quit.
  7. Hand stitch the long edges of your tube to your quilt, having the side with “the bump” (or
extra fabric) facing out. The extra fabric on this side of the tube will allow room for the hanging rod. Be sure to tack the ends of the tube.
Permanent Sleeve
Complete before binding is hand-sewn to back of quilt.
  1. Machine sew binding, as you usually do, to the front of the quilt, but do not bring the edge to the back and sew that down yet.
  2. Cut (and piece, if necessary) a strip of fabric 9" wide and the width of the finished quilt.
  3. Hem both short ends by turning 1/4" over twice and stitching close to the folded edge.
  4. Fold the strip lengthwise, wrong sides together, bringing one long raw edge up to an inch
below the other long raw edge. Press the folded edge well.
  5. Now bring the long unfinished edges together with the wrong sides to the inside, and sew
them together using a scant 1/4" seam. Do not turn the resulting tube.
  6. Line up the raw edges of the tube with the raw edges of the top of the quilt. Have the side of the tube with the "bump" (or extra fabric) facing out. Pin all layers together, being sure
to pin the binding out of the way so you do not sew over it. Have the front of the quilt facing you as you sew so you can stitch on the existing line of stitching. Machine sew the top raw edge of the tube to the top of the quilt.
  7. Hand sew the bottom pressed edge of the tube to your quilt. The extra fabric on this side of the tube will provide room for the hanging rod. Be sure to tack the ends of the tube.
  8. Hand sew the binding over the raw edges of the tube.
